How The Battle Inside is won

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’

The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

This tale has long been one of my favorites because of how much it resonates with me on a daily basis. We are faced with millions of moments in our lifetime and we have the choice to make each time on which we will feed. Those choices become our habits and those habits determine our path and our ultimate fate.

I think we often feel as though the work is what shapes us, whether that be in the gym, in the office or wherever your chosen field of battle may be. The truth is, the battle happens inside us and you win in the moment that you make up your mind and decide to take action.
